Mark McDonough
President & CEO
Mr. McDonough brings over 16 years of experience in diagnostic healthcare and life sciences to CombiMatrix. Led by his passion for patient care, he has spent his career growing early stage and emerging Cancer Diagnostics, Molecular Diagnostics and Commercial Laboratory organizations.
In August 2012, Mr. McDonough joined CombiMatrix as Chief Commercial Officer. His efforts to optimize the commercial aspects of CombiMatrix and his focus on Pre-natal testing have made an immediate impact on the company’s long-term strategy and financial success.
Mr. McDonough came to CombiMatrix from Pathwork Diagnostics where he was Vice President of Sales and Service. His business acumen was instrumental in driving all phases of the commercial efforts at Pathwork Diagnostics, including sales, reimbursement strategies and market creation of novel diagnostics that fulfilled a critical, yet unmet need for patients with metastatic disease.
Preceding Pathwork Diagnostics, Mr. McDonough held positions of increasing responsibility at US LABS, ultimately assuming the role of Vice President of Sales. He also served in an executive capacity at Dianon and Laboratory Corporation of America (post acquisition). His contributions as a field sales resource and sales leader from 2002-2004 were instrumental in the growth of US LABS from $17M to $75M resulting in the successful acquisition by Laboratory Corporation of America in early 2005. Mr. McDonough was with EMC Corporation and Ventana Medical Systems previous to US LABS.
Prior to joining the healthcare industry, Mr. McDonough was a ranking officer in the United States Navy for six years where he served as Navigator of the USS FLETCHER (DD 992).
Mr. McDonough received a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from Miami University-Ohio.
He lives in San Diego with his wife and three children.
Scott Burell
Chief Financial Officer
Scott Burell was promoted to Chief Financial Officer of CBMX in November 2006. Prior to this, Mr. Burell had served as our Vice President of Finance since November 2001 and as our Controller from February 2001 to November 2001. From May 1999 to first joining CombiMatrix in February 2001, Mr. Burell was the Controller for Network Commerce, Inc., a publicly traded technology and information infrastructure company located in Seattle. Prior to this, Mr. Burell spent 9 years with Arthur Andersen's Audit and Business Advisory practice in Seattle. Mr. Burell obtained his Washington state CPA license in 1992 and is a certified public accountant (currently inactive) and holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting and Business Finance from Central Washington University.
Karine` Hovanes, PhD, FACMG
Laboratory Director
Dr. Hovanes received her B.S. degree in Genetics from the University of California, Davis, and her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of California, Irvine. She completed her clinical cytogenetics and clinical molecular genetics trainings at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and University of California Los Angeles Intercampus Medical Genetics Training Program. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics as a Clinical Cytogeneticist and Clinical Molecular Geneticist. Her research projects in molecular biology have focused on characterization of structure and function of a number of genes implicated in human diseases. Prior to joining Combimatrix Diagnostics, Dr. Hovanes held positions as Assistant Director at the Molecular Laboratory at Esoterix and at the Genetics department at US LABS.
Michelle Strecker, MS, CGC
Director of Genetic Counseling Services
Michelle Strecker earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Washington and her Master’s of Science in Genetic Counseling from the University of Texas—Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. A board-certified genetic counselor with over a decade of clinical experience, Ms. Strecker began her career in 1999 as a prenatal genetic counselor at the University of Texas – Houston Medical School, where she also actively participated in the instruction and clinical supervision of UT Houston genetic counseling students. She then spent a year in the private sector providing prenatal genetic counseling and laboratory support for a cytogenetics and cystic fibrosis carrier screening laboratory. From 2004-2010, Ms. Strecker worked as a pediatric and adult genetic counselor with the University of California, San Francisco, where she saw patients in a number of specialty clinics, and worked closely with Division Chiefs Dr. Charles Epstein, and later Dr. Anthony Wynshaw-Boris, to help streamline clinic operations to improve patient care. In 2010, Ms. Strecker joined CombiMatrix Diagnostics as the Director of Genetic Counseling and Communications. She remains committed to patient-centered care, and works support CombiMatrix’s clients by providing them with the most relevant and up-to-date information about their patients’ results and their implications for clinical care.
Richard D. Hockett, Jr., M.D.
Chief Medical Officer
Richard D. Hockett, M.D. has served as our Chief Medical Officer since April 30, 2012. Prior to joining us, Dr. Hockett was the Chief Medical Officer from March 2009 to April 2012 at Affymetrix, Inc., genomic analysis tools company, where his responsibilities included applied genomics, new technology development, and regulatory affairs. From November 2008 to March 2009, Dr. Hockett was an independent consultant for Affymetrix. From 1999 to November 2008, Dr. Hockett was a Medical Fellow II, Group Leader for Genomic Medicine at Eli Lilly and Company, a pharmaceutical company. Dr. Hockett started his career as an Academic Pathologist in the Department of Pathology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he oversaw the Clinical Immunology and Molecular Diagnostic Laboratories. Dr. Hockett is a board certified Clinical Pathologist, received his M.D. degree from the University of Minnesota and did his residency in Clinical Pathology at Washington University, St. Louis.
