SNPs (pronounced "snips") are DNA sequence variations that occur when a single nucleotide (A, T, C, or G) in the genome sequence is altered. SNPs are the most common form of DNA sequence variation. They are useful polymorphic markers often associated with susceptibility to diseases or related to drug responsiveness. A small subset of SNPs may directly influence the quality and/or quantity of the gene product, resulting in an increased risk for certain diseases or to severe drug side effects.
